In today’s political climate, many of us and our fellow members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), wrestle with reconciling their beliefs with political candidates. The Church emphasizes key values such as honesty, integrity, respect for others, and moral leadership—principles that guide members in both their personal and public lives. When examining the rhetoric and behavior of former President Donald Trump, many of his actions and statements seem to diverge sharply from these core values.
When examining Donald Trump’s public behavior and rhetoric, it becomes clear that many of his actions are at odds with the core values taught by The LDS Church. Leaders of the Church consistently emphasize the importance of voting for politicians who demonstrate honesty, integrity, compassion, and moral leadership. While no candidate is perfect, the pattern of behavior displayed by Trump raises serious concerns about his alignment with these values.
As President Dieter F. Uchtdorf wisely counseled: “In this life, we must be true to our principles. We must do the right thing even when it is not popular.”
– General Conference, October 2015.
As Members of the LDS Church, we are encouraged to thoughtfully and prayerfully consider the character, values, and moral integrity of the candidates they support. In doing so, we fulfill their civic responsibility while upholding the teachings of the gospel.
Trump does not represent LDS Values.
Consider another candidate or write in a person who reflects your LDS values.
