The LDS Church has a long-standing history of compassion toward immigrants and refugees. Many of us are descended from pioneers, immigrants & refugees who sought a better life in the United States and Utah. In 2016, President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, himself a refugee, stated:
“There are those who, because of circumstances beyond their control, must leave behind everything they have—friends, family, and even country—to escape violence, oppression, or poverty. As members of the Church of Jesus Christ, we must open our hearts and reach out to those in need.” – Ensign, November 2016, “The Refugee One of Us.”
By contrast, Trump’s administration implemented policies that were widely criticized as being inhumane, particularly toward refugees and immigrants. His “zero-tolerance” policy resulted in the separation of thousands of children from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border, sparking international outrage. This policy was seen by many, including LDS members, as contrary to the Church’s teachings of compassion and care for the vulnerable.
