Voting as a Matter of Conscience

Our LDS leaders have consistently emphasized the importance of voting according to conscience, not merely following party loyalty or pressure from societal norms. President Russell M. Nelson, the current President of the Church, has underscored that voting is not just a political act, but a moral one, deeply tied to gospel principles:

Your vote is not just a political decision—it is a moral one. Seek out leaders who exemplify integrity, honor, and virtue.” – Worldwide Leadership Training Broadcast, June 2011.

This counsel highlights the importance of seeking out candidates who demonstrate high ethical standards. In the political world, however, it is common to encounter candidates from both major parties whose behaviors and policies seem inconsistent with these values. LDS members should remember that they are not restricted to choosing the “lesser of two evils.” Instead, they are encouraged to vote for individuals who align with their principles, even if that means exploring third-party or independent candidates, or writing in a candidate who better represents gospel values.
